Flamenco - Granada
History of flamenco in Granada
The (_do you mean style of? Not all flamenco is cante jondo_) flamenco
known as “cante jondo” (translated literally as profound song) has
become the form of artistic expression which is the most representative
of andalucian folklore. It was born from a mixture of cultures - an
expression of regionality.
Granada is without doubt one of the sites of the most artistic
expression and “duende” (or feeling for flamenco) derived from this
mixture of cultures.
It is not surprising then that is was Granada, capital city of the
province bearing the same name, which welcomed in its grounds the first
competition of flamenco song in 1922. This is thanks largely to
important celebrities of that time such as Federico Garcia Lorca and
Manuel de Falla, both Granainos to whom this area is greatly indebted.
